We went into Edinburgh today. Fine day, sun at times, bit windy, no rain. We managed to find street parking after driving around a bit, closer than we realised to where we wanted to start. One day doesn’t do any justice to the city, but we don’t have time to allow any more. We drove one of our “housemates” both ways, a Canadian girl studying physiotherapy here. We didn’t see as much as we had planned, but that’s the story of our travelling. We strolled along part of The Royal Mile/High Street, full of tourists. Found a good coffee shop then went to look at St Giles Cathedral, the High Kirk of Edinburgh. It was founded in 1120 and extended over centuries and the crown spire was added in 1495. They take tours up the spire and Rick was the only on on the tour. Went as far as the room with the clock mechanism that runs the clock and rings the clock bells. Pretty loud when the bells rang. As usual, great views from up there. The original organ gave up, was replaced in 1940, but workmanship was not all that good and the present one was built in 1992.
This is a busker working his puppet in time with the canned music he was playing. Very clever, looked real.
We found a little pub nearby and had a bite to eat, then visited Glasstone’s Land, a 500 year old tenement house bought by Thomas Gladstone and extended to create a very comfortable, affluent house to impress. Guide was knowledgeable but rambled on a bit. It was then time to meet Taylor and go back “home”.
The air bnb we are staying in is effectly a shared house, with the owner couple and, at the moment, 2 others (and us). We have the run of the house and have some pretty crazy evenings with all of us together. 4 nights here has been good fun and we’ll be sorry to leave tomorrow.
Love Edinburgh, haven't been into or up to the top of the church - next time.
