Colechester Thursday

0713 Great Yarmouth wind farm P7130004

Another bright, sunny, warn morning. We had a great view of a 30 turbine wind farm from our window. We visited the wind farm visitor info centre before we left. Interesting stuff. Each of the 30 wind turbines at Scroby Sands has a monopile (single pile) foundation. The 200t long cylindrical steel tubes are 4m in diameter and up to 50m long. The pile driving vessel hammered the piles about 30m into the sea bed using a hydraulic ram.

We had a brief look at “The Elizabethan House”, a National Trust property on the edge of town and an old steam drifter fishing boat before heading down the coast to look at a village with “wonky houses”. Didn’t find any, but the village was very neat and tidy. We passed the site of a huge music festival, starting today for a few days and, with the bumper to bumper traffic coming the other way, we were very glad that we weren’t caught up in it. Gill has a nails appointment in Colchester this afternoon, so we headed straight there. Found a multi storey car park nearby easily. We’re now in the Holiday Inn Express in Colchester, about half an hour from the Port of Harwich. We need to get up around 5:45 am tomorrow to have breakfast by 6:30, get to the ferry terminal, check in, go through customs etc to depart at 9am.

Our time in the UK has gone so quickly, but we are looking forward to time in Europe. We have our first night in Delft booked, then the next few ‘til we leave Amsterdam.
