Last night’s B&B was very comfortable and the sharp, seemingly grouchy host was quite different in the morning, was happy & chatted on. Maybe she had a bad day yesterday. We did some planning for the day and booked accommodation at the Blue Boar for the night. Everything is so close that, if we ended up somewhere else, it would not take us long to get to the Blue Boar. It was a pain looking for accommodation for so long last night. Found the Blue Boar on Lastminute.com, 59GBP including breakfast. When we left the B&B, we went to have a look at the Oxford Canal (what a surprise huh!) running through the town. Very appealing, probably a little more so for one of us.
We then went to Great Tew, for no other reason than the name was interesting and we were not a long way from it. So glad that we did, it is a very picturesque village, as are many small English villages.
Next stop was Bibury with, so the signs say, probably the most photographed village in England. The row of medieval houses were spectacular. The rest of the small village was also very attractive.
Just had to visit Lower Slaughter. Another stunning village. Upper Slaughter was dead (ha ha) compared with Lower, attractive but not the character.
Chipping Campden was another very attractive, but much bigger, town with a stunning Market Hall, built in 1627. Would you believe that, in the 1940s, it was almost sold to an American. Fortunately the locals raised the money to buy it and then gave it to the National Trust. Note the activity and advertising at the polling booth! Yes, it is open.
The last, apart from tonight’s pub, stop was to see the Middle Littleton Tythe Barn, one of the largest 13th century tithe barns in England.
We are now at the Blue Boar and have a very pleasant room (with an opening window for air!!) and ensuite. Going downstairs (we always seem to be upstairs and usually at the end of long passages at the pubs we stay at) soon for a light bar meal. Bottle of South African Sav Blanc is almost finished. We’ll plan our stop tomorrow night and book it.
Very pretty villages - we will need to take notes so we can see them next year.
