Worcester Sunday

We had a very comfortable night and good breakfast at the holiday Inn Express just north of Birmingham. As we were getting very short on clean clothes (we managed to hand wash on a number of nights, so gained about a week), we headed to a laundrette just outside Worcester. 8GBP did our washing and drying in about 50 minutes. Then it was off to find multi storey car park in the middle of Worcester. Went around the block looking for the car park and then missed the first left turn and managed to cut across 2 lanes of traffic to make the next entrance. The Crown hotel is about 5 mins easy walk from the car. Our room was ready, so we were able to check in early, dump our stuff and head out to explore. We walked down to the Severn River and along the path beside. Got as far as the Diglis Basin, about 1 mile downstream, where the canal meets the river and were distracted by boats going through the 2 locks between the canal and the river (we will pass through them during next week).

Walked up to the Cathedral, completed in 1374 and a spectacular building with……. a tower to climb. 235 steps, becoming narrower as the top became closer. Stunning views from the top.

On the way down, the door to the bell ringer’s room was open, so got to watch them for a while. They played various melodies for about 1 hour until the 4pm service. They changed bell order a number of times without missing a beat. Must take a lot of concentration because the  bell ringers have to start pulling the bell cord before they hear their bell.

Sat outside the pub with a good coffee later, struggled with the tedious process of connecting to the hotel wifi then Joan and John arrived. Well we had to open a bottle to welcome them. Went downstairs for a very good value dinner (Wetherspoons, as you remember Jan) and now writing the blog.

This is likely to be the last post for a week, until we’re off the boat.

  1. Your trip looks great so far, lovely places and brings back good memories and yes we remember Weatherspoons very well.
I am sure you will have a great week on the houseboat - I am looking forward to doing another one ourselves. Looking forward to seeing the photos and reading the blog in another week.
