Grafenhausen Tuesday

Another beautiful Swiss morning. We had a long drive ahead of us today, so we hadn’t planned to see anything. That lasted for half an hour. “Look at the suspension bridge” said Gill. We found a place to turn around, and a coin operated parking meter, but we had no Swiss money. Because we were only spending a couple of nights in Switzerland, we didn’t want to get cash and hoped we could put everything on a card. Gill stayed with the car, trying to think up plausible excuses why we hadn’t paid for parking while Rick walked across the 280 metre long, 92 metre high pedestrian bridge. The bridge crosses the young Rhone River. Impressive.

On we went, until the GPS told us to turn right and board the ferry. In the middle of the mountains? Turned out it was a car train to take us through the mountain.

The tunnel cut out a lot of winding road over the pass, and we rejoined the winding road just after we got off the train.

Great bit of mountain road to drive on. We’ve never seen so many motor bikes, mostly Harleys and BMWs enjoying the road.

We were happily minding our own business, driving through tunnels and open roads when we came out of a tunnel and saw this.

It is Lake Lucerne, and we stopped at Tellsplatte, reputed to be where William Tell risked his life by jumping onto the Tellsplatte and out of the clutches of the provincial governor. Don’t know what he was escaping from yet. Switzerland’s largest glockenspiel is located there and plays a melody every hour.

You can click on this link to see and hear the glockenspiel. https://youtu.be/Y2tO_KvGaH8.

The remainder of our drive was, fortunately, uneventful, although we were sorry to leave the Swiss mountains behind. Rick’s back in shorts today, temperature reached 30 degrees.
We are looking forward to seeing Erich and Ursula tomorrow, not far from the beautiful city of Ulm.
Time for a glass of wine.
Postcript: we weren't going to admit it if it was no good, but it was good: Our 1 litre bottle of French Sav. Blanc from the local shop here for Eu 2.49. It's finished, so we're sure it couldn't have been 1 litre.

  2. The suspension bridge looks amazing. Did it get a good swing up as you walked across. As for the glockenspiel, it is probably better to hear it insitu, not over he speakers on our computer. Keep enjoying the warm weather. Its cold here but today the sun came out and it was quite pleasant.

    1. Certainly was a good swing. Probably impossible for it not to swing. It was great.
